MBA Online Student Recruitment… Syracuse University: 34 Email Contacts Reviewed

34 Syracuse University emails from 17 August to 22 February

Syracuse University Online MBAEmails subject lines reveal what an MBA program believes is important marketing content to convince potential students to submit an application and enroll. From the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University, that includes 34 subject lines from September 20 to February 21.

For new visitors… this is the 6th installment in a series reviewing email recruitment communications and social media presence from 4 online MBA programs: American, Simmons College, Syracuse University, and the University of Dayton.

Email reports for each school start with the second email sent.

September…  2 webinars, a strong brand claim, international residencies (7 Emails)

  1. Apply by September 29 for a Reduced Fee and an Earlier Decision
  2. Join the Next MBA Webinar… (a “free online information session” to learn more.)
  3. Priority Deadline Approaching for Syracuse Online Master’s… (“priority” gets me a decision “sooner” and a $30 reduction in the $75 app fee.)
  4. The MBA@Syracuse Experience… (3 ways that Syracuse delivers “a learning experience unlike anything you’ve ever experienced” : “Live Classes,” “Accessible Faculty,” and “Real Networking” with a link to “learn more.”)
  5. Submit Your Application by Friday for Priority Consideration
  6. Learn About Syracuse Networking Opportunities in Our Webinar… (an MBA “student roundtable.)
  7. Residencies Around the World… (3-day meetings with students, faculty, and industry experts “structured like a business conference.” Locations inn the U.S. plus Dubai, Dublin, Florence in 2018.)

October… 6 application reminders and 2 webinar invites (8 Emails)

  1. Apply to Syracuse’s Online Master’s Program by November 6
  2. You’re Invited to a Student Roundtable Webinar on October 18
  3. Submit Your Syracuse Application by November 6
  4. Deadline Approaching. Apply to Syracuse by November 6.
  5. Join the Next MBA Webinar… (another “free online information session” with “an admission counselor.”)
  6. Submit Your Application by November 6 to Begin in January
  7.  Syracuse Online Master’s Application Due November 6
  8. Apply by Next Monday to Begin in January

November… 2 deadline reminders, a new start date, a webinar invite (6 Emails)

  1. Final Deadline: Apply by November 6 to Start in January
  2. Last Chance to Start Your Master’s Program in January
  3. Deadline Extension May Be Available for Syracuse… (contact an admissions counselor to “discuss options.”)
  4. Ask Your Admissions Counselor About a Deadline Extension
  5. Action Required: Update Your Cohort Start Date… (no action taken but emails for new April start date continue.)
  6.  Learn About Syracuse Networking Opportunities in Our Webinar… (featuring students and “an application fee waiver” for people attending.)

December… A push for a January application (3 Emails)

  1.  Apply to Syracuse by January 5 for a Reduced Fee… (reducing application fee to $45.)
  2. Apply by January 5 for a Reduced Fee and an Earlier Decision
  3. Apply to Syracuse’s Online Master’s Program by January 5

January… Odd contact from admissions counselor, deadlines, webinars (7 Emails)

  1. Join the Next MBA Webinar… (To learn how to earn an MBA “without sacrificing your personal or professional commitments.”)
  2. Submit Your Syracuse Application by February 6
  3. Is there a better number to reach you?… (Someone has discovered that my phone number provided at time of inquiry in September does not work.)
  4. MBA@Syracuse | Connecting with Admissions… (Odd timing as an admissions counselor introduces himself and looks “forward to discussing program details and answering questions you may have.”)
  5. Deadline Extension: Syracuse Online Master’s Application
  6. You’re Invited to a Student Panel Webinar on February 1
  7. Syracuse Online Master’s Application Due February 13

February… Application reminders, new April cohort starting date. (3 Emails)

  1. Final Deadline: Apply by February 13 to Start in April
  2. Ask Your Admissions Counselor About a Deadline Extension
  3. Action Required: Update Your Cohort Start Date… (Again, no action taken but emails have continued in March and April.)

Notes: Most Syracuse emails followed the usual pattern of application deadline reminders and webinar invitations. But 3 points stood out: (1) a September attempt at brand differentiation promoting the online Syracuse MBA experience as “unlike anything you’ve ever experienced,” (2) a late January contact from a named admissions counselor seeking a phone number for a person-to-person contact, (3) 2 “action required” emails that didn’t actually require any action to remain active for continued email cultivation for the next cohort entry date.

A missed opportunity? The “international residency” experiences (3 of these 3-day meetings are required) seems a better way to differentiate the Syracuse brand than the points raised in the September “Syracuse Experience” email. But only one September email mentioned these.

Over the next few weeks… Facebook, Twitter, inquiry forms

We’ll take a look at how each school communicates on Facebook and Twitter. But before that in the next post: a review of the inquiry forms in use.
