Remarkably clean, simple 7 line inquiry form from DePauw University

DePauw UniversityDirect marketers have long known that if you keep an inquiry form brief more people will complete it. Alas, most higher education inquiry froms to not follow that principle. DePauw University is a rare exception.

Inquiry froms can also be difficult to find on a college website. DePauw again deviates from the usual by placing a  “Get info” link in a highly visible location to the right of the home page as it opens on a desktop or laptop computer. The link is equally visible on the mobile version.

Kudos to DePauw for omitting so much of what too often clutters inquiry forms but is not needed to provide an initial response:

  • Gender
  • Ethnicity
  • High School CEEB code
  • Date of birth
  • Academic interest area
  • How did you hear about us?
  • And more

Almost every college and univerity inquiry form asks for an areas of academic interest. And in my many years of secret shopping I’ve only found one school (a regional public university) that actually used this element in the initial email response series.

If you are not going to use academic area in your pre-application inquiry communications, don’t ask for it on the inquiry form. Better yet, ask for it… and use it from the first response. FYI, that regional public university responded to my inquiry first from the chair of the biology department and soon after from the person heading the pre-med committee. Yes, my interest area was “pre-med.”
