Your Higher Education Marketing Link of the Week… Task Oriented News Sites at Cambridge, UNSW… 17 June 2022

News by topics: Easy to Find at Cambridge University, University of New South Wales

Let’s make an assumption that is not yet supported by top task research: Many if not most people who visit a university news page are more interested in news about some topics than others.

Most news pages don’t make completing this task especially easy to do. Cambridge and UNSW are different.

University of CambridgeUniversity of New South WalesWhen the Cambridge and UNSW pages open on a desk top or lap top computer visitors will immediately see across the top of the page several news topic categories that let them go direct to “Health and Medicine” or “Science & Tech” or any of several others.

The Cambridge design makes the 8 topics a bit more visible than the 9 at UNSW but both are easy to scan for people whose interest in not captured by the lead story of the moment. That’s the important point: people are not forced to wander about in search of a news category of primary interest.

These news sites were included among 10 selected by TerminalFor as “10 university news pages to inspire your next website redesign.” Some of the other 8 schools (but not all) list topics a link away from the main page. None match the visibility of Cambridge and UNSW.

University of CambridgeTopics content isn’t as immediately evident in the mobile version. Here UNSW visitors will have to use the hamburger menu to see the list. Cambridge is better: Visitors will see a “News Categories” link as the page first opens without having to use the hamburger route.
