Academic Program Search Dominates 2 Canadian University Home Pages

Regina UniversityUniversity of the Fraser ValleyNearly all potential students visiting a university home page for the first time have one of two top tasks: either (1) finding out if an academic program of interest is offered and (2) learning how much this place will cost me?

The two university Link of the Week pages today allow visitors to immediately see the path to complete the academic program task when the page opens.

Home pages like this are rare at a time when many universities are intent on delivering an immediate “brand” message on their home page. Pages

Regina University and University of the Fraser Valley do this as well as any I’ve seen.

Regina opens with a program search box, with the ability to sort by 4 program types: (1) certificate, (2) diploma, (3) bachelor’s degree, and (4) master’s certificate.

Fraser Valley includes a bit more: a “Find Your Program” link opens an easy-to-scan alpha list of 20 program areas. Additional links in the opening box gives visitors 3 other choices: (1) See an “A to Z” program list, (2) “Ask a Question,” and (3) “Apply to UVF.” In effect, we have links here for people who have moved past the “do you have my program?” stage. The “Ask a Question” link serves as an inquiry form as well.

Kudos to both schools for a clear student recruitment emphasis right from the start of a first visit. When a potential students finds (and often visits) a program of interest, brand messages and other content can follow.

Speed on mobile… similar results for each

University of the Fraser Valley

  • Google PageSpeed Insights measures the home page time to first view on a mobile phone at an 4.1 seconds and time to full interactivity at 10 seconds.
  • The main change for a faster download speed is one not seen before in our checks: “Serve images in next-gen formats.”

Regina University

  • Google PageSpeed Insights measures this Newsroom page time to first view at 3.2 seconds. Complete interactivity is a long 11.1 seconds.
  • The main change for faster download: “Defer offscreen images.”

Website Carbon Calculator… neither does well

  • “This web page is dirtier than 71% of web pages tested.”

Regina University

  • “This web page is dirtier than 70% of web pages tested.”
